Tarot’s role in the mind.

Psychological Benefits of Tarot

Becky Moore

“When I was first really focusing on trying to strengthen my intuition, I would get these like thoughts and then I'd be like, ‘Well, I'm just making that shit up.’ And so then I would put that to the cards, and it kind of helped to validate what I was feeling and what I was sensing. ”

“Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more.”

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Jung believed that archetypes are universal, primal symbols and images that derive from the collective unconscious. In one perspective (), These archetypes manifest in myths, dreams, and artistic expressions, including tarot.

A Jungian Approach to Tarot

Individuation and the Major Arcana

One of the core concepts in Jungian psychology is individuation, the process of becoming aware of oneself, integrating various aspects of the unconscious into the conscious mind, and achieving a sense of wholeness. The Major Arcana of the Tarot, which includes 22 cards from the Fool to the World, can be seen as a symbolic representation of the individuation process. Each card in the Major Arcana represents a different stage or challenge in this journey towards self-realization (S 2023).

For example, the Fool represents the beginning of the journey, embodying innocence and potential. The Magician, as the second card, signifies the development of conscious awareness and the ability to manifest one's will. As the journey progresses, the individual encounters various archetypal figures and experiences, each contributing to the integration of the unconscious with the conscious mind.

Active Imagination and Tarot

Jung developed a technique called active imagination, which involves engaging with the images and symbols from the unconscious in a conscious dialogue. This method can be effectively applied to the Tarot. By meditating on a Tarot card, one can enter into a dialogue with the archetypal images it represents. This practice can uncover insights about personal issues, emotional states, and unconscious patterns that influence behavior. Active imagination with Tarot cards allows individuals to explore their inner worlds, bringing unconscious material to light and facilitating personal growth and healing.

Synchronicity and Divination

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.

Other Psychological Interpretations

  • Projection Tool

Tarot has been utilized as a projective tool by therapists and counselors. Much like the Rorschach inkblot test, the images on Tarot cards can serve as a mirror to the individual’s psyche, allowing them to project and explore their subconscious thoughts, feelings, and experiences (S 2023).
