China is particularly critical to the story, as it was the birthplace of paper (and, hence, playing cards) between 200-100BCE. A few hundred years later, the technology of wood-cut printing allowed for many of the same pattern to be produced, and playing cards were seen having extremely similar suits to modern decks.
